  • COVID-19 is not sexually transmitted

Unless, of course, if you manage to commit coitus in gas masks.

We anticipate the main doubt of the readers: yes, we know how difficult it will be to have sexual intercourse without getting infected with the usual way of transmitting COVID-19 - airborne one. In theory, you can do it, probably, but there will be not so much pleasure.

But the study conducted by scientists from the University of Utah is not a bit about that. They tested the effect of the virus on the reproductive system of men, and non-sexual transmission is one of several conclusions. The full study can be found here:

Scientists studied sperm samples from 34 Chinese citizens a month after recovery. All of them had mild or moderate severity of the disease, and in all cases, the tests yielded a negative result. The search for traces of SARS-CoV-2 was also necessary to check the similarity with the Ebola and Zika viruses.

But if there is no trace of the virus in semen, then this does not exclude that it can remain in the testicles of an ill man. The second part of the study, which turned out to be much more complicated, was devoted to this. For this, scientists analyzed the expression of genes associated with coronavirus - ACE2 and TMPRSS2. With their help, SARS-CoV-2 penetrates the cells. Their presence was found only in four cases on 6500 testicular tissue cells. According to research estimates, this indicates a complete absence of infection.

The authors call the studies encouraging, but not too accurate. It is necessary to conduct another study on the biomaterial of severely ill patients, as they have a much higher viral load.
