The myths about Chastity Belt
First mentions of chastity belts, which knights wore to their wives (or another knights’ wives, if they were really pretty) right before they went to a long-term crusade, were first encountered in the 15th century’s book "Bellifortis" by Konrad Kyeser, German engineer.
Since then, some mentions on chastity belts have come up in one or two chronicles, provoking historians. Especially many references were recorded in the XIX century by the scientists of the Victorian era. Since then archaeologists began to find real chastity belts!
And only in the XX century it turned out that many of these belts were Victorian fakes. A more detailed analysis of the sources in turn, led the researchers to the upsetting thought that all the mentions of chastity belts in medieval literature is just a harmless metaphor. Well, the doctors, of course, could not stand aside: they argue that no one can withstand prolonged with metal to the skin: there could be irritation, wounds, then an infection, and after that there will be blood infection.
