Rallies in Indonesia against the law banning sex before marriage
Indonesian authorities propose criminal penalties for sex before marriage. Citizens who break prohibition may spend a year in prison. If the law is passed, women who decide to have an abortion can also be behind bars.
Protests against the adoption of the law took place not only in Jakarta but also in several other major cities of Indonesia. In the capital, however, there is a riot - the protesters threw stones, sticks and other rubbish at the police.
The law enforcement officers in response used water cannons and tear gas.
It is noted that the consideration of the bill banning sex before marriage was scheduled for September 24. The current president of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, decided to postpone the consideration of the law because of the outbreak of mass protests.
